What Is a Rock Auger?

For Kelly Drilling

A rock auger is a specialized drilling attachment for rotary piling rigs, designed to penetrate hard soil, weathered rock, fractured rock, and medium-to-hard formations that standard soil piling tools cannot handle. Unlike conventional soil augers, a heavy duty rock auger is built with reinforced flights (15–25mm plate thickness), thicker central pipe walls (25–40mm), and replaceable tungsten carbide cutting teeth that fracture rock at the cutting face.

Rock augers are an essential class of piling tools used in bored pile foundations, bridge construction, high-speed railway projects, and deep excavation work. When choosing a piling rig auger, the critical factors are tooth type, flight design (single vs double), and profile (straight vs progressive). A properly matched rig auger can drill economically in rock up to 120 MPa — beyond that, core barrels or roller bits are recommended.

Whether you need a 600mm auger for small-diameter bored piles or a hard rock drilling auger for granite formations, selecting the right configuration directly impacts penetration rate, tool life, and overall project cost. FES offers a complete range of rock augers for every geological condition.

Key Features of FES Rock Augers

Custom Configuration & Cost-Effective Solutions

Factory-direct pricing, 600mm–2000mm standard models shipped in 15 days, custom builds in 25 days.

Full Tooth Compatibility for Every Formation

Compatible with B47K, DS05, and C31HD tooth systems — change teeth, not the auger body, for any rock formation.

Precision Manufacturing & Rig Compatibility

Every weld passes X-ray inspection; fits Bauer, Soilmec, Casagrande, and all major rotary piling rigs.

20+ Years of Engineering Experience

Two decades of global export across Europe, Middle East, and North America, with 24-hour technical support.

Built for Heavy-Duty Rock Drilling

Every heavy duty rock auger from FES is engineered with premium materials: Q355B steel flights with 65Mn wear plates (HB280 hardness), 27SiMn alloy central pipes (yield strength >835 MPa), and forged alloy teeth plates with high-hardness welding wire (>HRC55). This material combination ensures structural integrity under extreme torque and abrasive conditions, making our rock augers a reliable choice among all piling tools on the market.

Heavy Duty Rock Auger: Hardness & Tooth Guide

We offer a full range of bullet teeth to match your hard rock drilling auger — from weathered mudstone to ultra-hard granite. Use the table below to select the right tooth type based on your rock’s compressive strength.

All You Need to Know About Rock Augers

For hard rock above 80 MPa, we recommend the Double-Cut Double-Flight Progressive Rock Auger — it provides maximum cutting force and stability. For rock above 150 MPa, pair it with B47K30H teeth and wear washers for extended service life.

Single-flight has one spiral — faster spoil removal, less torque needed, best for soft to medium rock. Double-flight has two spirals — greater stability, even force distribution, best for hard and compact formations.

FES piling rig augers fit all major brands — Bauer, Soilmec, Casagrande, Liebherr, Sany, and XCMG. Standard diameters range from 600mm to 2000mm, with Kelly box sizes from 100mm to 250mm. Custom connections are available on request.

Yes. We manufacture custom rock augers from 500mm to 2500mm. You can customize cutting type, flight design, profile, tooth model, and Kelly box connection. Custom orders take 25–35 days.

All teeth are individually replaceable — no need to replace the whole auger. Service life depends on rock hardness: B47K in soft rock lasts 80–120 hours, C31HD in soft rock 60–80 hours, and B47K30H in hard rock 40–60 hours. Replacement teeth ship within 7 days.

Standard rock augers (600mm–2000mm): 15–20 days. Custom configurations: 25–35 days. Replacement teeth and wear parts are in stock and ship within 7 days. Expedited production is available for urgent projects.
